What can I actually build with Claude Code? Ideas for your first app
· The Launchpad crew · 3 min read
If you've heard about Claude Code, you've probably heard the big claim: describe what you want, and it writes the software. That's true. What nobody tells you is what to describe, or what happens after it's written. This post is for you if you have ideas and no idea where to start.
The short version
Claude Code is Claude, working inside a folder on your computer, able to write and run software. You talk to it in plain English. Launchpad gives it a safe, ready-made place online to put what it builds, so the result isn't a file on your laptop but a link you can send to someone.
You don't need to know how any of it works. You need to know what you want.
Good first apps
The best first app is small, useful to a specific person, and would otherwise live in a spreadsheet or an email thread. Some that small teams launch in a day:
- A leave-request tracker. Staff submit dates, a manager approves, everyone sees who's off when.
- A quote calculator. Customers pick options, the app works out the price, and you get an email.
- A booking form for a room, a vehicle, a consultation, or a court.
- A simple client portal where customers can see the status of their order or job.
- An inventory list your team updates from their phones.
- An event RSVP page with a guest list you can export.
- An internal directory: who does what, how to reach them, where things are.
- A checklist app for onboarding, site inspections, or opening and closing procedures.
Notice what these have in common: one screen, one list of things, a couple of people who care. That's the sweet spot.
What to say to Claude
You don't need special wording. Say it the way you'd explain it to a colleague:
Build a leave-request app for my team of eight. People should log in, pick their dates and add a note. I approve or decline from a list. Everyone can see a calendar of who's away.
Claude will ask a couple of questions, then build it. When it shows you the result, tell it what's wrong the same way:
The calendar should start on Monday, and I want an email when someone requests leave.
That's the whole loop. Describe, look, adjust.
Getting it online
This is the step that stops most people, and it's the one Launchpad removes. Once the Launchpad connector is installed in the Claude desktop app, you say:
Launch a Launchpad server and put this app live.
Claude asks Launchpad for a private server, waits for it to be ready, moves the app onto it, sets up the database, and gives you a web address. Your team can use it from their phones the same afternoon.
You never see a server. You never configure anything. If you break something, it's on your own private server and Claude can fix it or you can start fresh.
How to start today
- Install the Claude desktop app and open the Code tab.
- Reserve a Launchpad slot. We'll set up your account and send you a secret key.
- Install the Launchpad connector in the desktop app (here's how).
- Pick one idea from the list above and describe it to Claude.
If you get stuck at any point, a person at mission control will help you through your first launch. That's what the first launch is for.
